Graphic Design Competition for the Visual Identity of Building Montréal, UNESCO City of Design

In August 2008, the Design Montréal office of the Ville de Montréal and the UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design at Université de Montréal (CUPEUM) invited the graphic design firms that had taken part in the Design Montréal Open House event in 2007 and/or 2008 to submit tenders (with payment for concept) to develop the visual identity for Réalisons Montréal, Ville UNESCO de design (Building Montréal, UNESCO City of Design).

Competition

Following a preparatory briefing to explain the mandate and the Building Montréal, UNESCO City of Design project, three firms decided to submit tenders:

  • Baillat Cardell et Fils
  • FEED
  • Orangetango

The firms were paid a professional fee to cover part of the cost of preparing one or two proposals.

A jury made up of representatives of the project producers and an industry professional interviewed the tendering firms, who gave presentations explaining their proposals and their visions of the project.

In the event that more than one firm qualified on the basis of its concept proposal, the jury reserved the right to select the winner on the basis of the lowest tender (opening of a sealed envelope containing the fee amount requested for the mandate).

Members of the jury

  • Marie-Josée Lacroix, Director, Design Montréal
  • Philippe Lamarre, Vice-President, Société des designers graphiques du Québec
  • Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec, Chairholder, UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design

Evaluation criteria

The proposals were evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Strength of the concept (esthetic value, originality, innovative nature);
  • East of application (versatility);
  • Respect of the mandate;
  • Only if necessary: fee amount requested.

Winner

The firm FEED was selected and awarded the initial mandate to:

  • Develop the chosen signature concept;
  • Produce the communications tools for the June 3, 2009, news conference.

FEED is a graphic design studio founded in Montréal in 1999 by Anouk Pennel and Raphaël Daudelin. It specializes in design of print materials, for publications as well as promotion of events and exhibitions, and visual identity creation (branding). FEED’s work clearly displays a direct approach, consistently guided by the editorial content and the creators’ passion for typography.
